Father's Day at The Rocks | 1st September 2024

Grace offends our sense of fairness because it moves at the speed of love, not the scale of merit.

Grace sounds beautiful—until it offends us.
Whether it’s the rebellious son welcomed home, the last-minute worker paid first, or the scandalous woman honoured for her love, Jesus shows us a grace that disrupts our sense of fairness. In this series, we’ll explore three parables and moments where grace didn’t just surprise people—it provoked them. Because real grace doesn’t follow our rules. It breaks them, for love.

Small Group Discussion Questions

Below you will find access to each week's discussion questions!
Week 1 | The Prodigal Son
Grace is offensive to the law-keeper because it celebrates relationship over performance.

Discussion Questions:
1. When you think of “responsible” people, do you relate more to the younger or older brother in the story? Why?
2. Have you ever felt like you were doing all the right things but still felt distant from God? What was that like for you?
3. Which line from the parable stood out to you most, and why do you think that is?
4. What do you think it means to “live in the house but miss the heart”?
5. How do you personally measure your closeness to God—and has that changed over time?
6. In what ways can striving for goodness sometimes become a barrier to experiencing grace?
7. What does it look like to stop “working for love” and start “living from it” in your everyday life?
8. Who in your world might need to hear that grace runs both down the road and into the field?
Week 2 | The Workers in the Vineyard
Grace is offensive to those who feel entitled because God’s generosity ignores merit.

Discussion Questions:

1. Can you think of a time when you felt like someone else got something they didn’t deserve? How did you respond?
2. In the story of the workers, who do you relate to more—the early hires or the 5pm ones? Why?
3. How do you think our culture reinforces the idea that we must earn everything—even love or acceptance?
4. Why do you think grace often feels unfair to people who have been faithful for a long time?
5. How does comparing yourself to others affect your relationship with God or your motivation in life?
6. What’s the difference between serving to belong and serving because you belong?
7. Who in your life have you found it hardest to extend grace toward?
8. How would it change your week if you lived like grace, not performance, defined your value?
Week 3 | The Woman Who Anointed Jesus
Grace is offensive to those who play it safe because it honours love that holds nothing back.

Discussion Questions:

1. What’s your honest reaction to the woman’s actions in this story—does it inspire you, make you uncomfortable, or something else?
2. Can you think of a time when you experienced grace that really changed how you lived?
3. Simon invited Jesus into his house but kept his heart closed—how do we sometimes do the same?
4. The woman’s act of worship was risky and costly. What might it look like for us to express our faith in ways that stretch us?
5. What’s something you’re holding onto—comfort, time, reputation—that grace might be inviting you to release?
6. In what ways has grace impacted your approach to giving, serving, or forgiving?
7. Do you tend to treat grace more like a safety net or a starting point? Why?
8. What would a church full of people living like this woman actually look and feel like?

Bible Reading Plan - Main Focus

If you find yourself wanting to dive deeper into the Bible around what the grace is and how it works, we would recommend by starting with 'Am I Really a Christian' through YouVersion.
Too many Christians love Jesus but still wonder anxiously if they’re ‘good enough,' if they’re really saved, or if they can lose their salvation. In this six-day reading plan, Daniel Indradjaja tackles these fears head-on, exploring the biblical truth about eternal security. Our Heavenly Father loves us too much to let us live in doubt about His unconditional love for us.

Unlimited Grace - 14 Days

Jesus pours out His grace. As the Son of God, He came to a broken world to bring redemption. He took the punishment that we deserve and through His work on the cross, we get to experience new mercies each day. This reading plan allows you to read His words of life and experience His grace with each day of the study. Enjoy Jesus as you are filled with grace.

Grace Wins - 14 Days

Jesus came to give us something greater than what the world can give us. Again and again, His grace always wins. Join us on a 14-day devotional series, written by Pastors Josh and Georgie Kelsey of C3 NYC, on stories in the gospels of grace’s victory through Jesus.

Some of us may be at a point where want more structured theological discourse around these topics. Below you will find resources from a free online seminary that will be helpful. A seminary is simply a Christian university that focusses on theology and ministry.

Types of Grace

40-minute Single Lecture
Dr. Breshear explains the three dimensions of grace: common grace that restrains sin and promotes good, prevenient grace that enables but doesn’t guarantee response, and effectual grace that ensures salvation for the elect. He examines key passages like John 6, John 12, and Romans 2 and 9, and compares Calvinist, Arminian, and Calminian perspectives. Grace is not only unmerited favor but also divine empowerment for repentance, sanctification, and obedience within God’s redemptive work.

Forgiveness

Eight Lecture Class
There are only two things we can do with the past. We can either forgive, or we can let our past hurts control us. There is no third option. Dr. Toews gently walks through what forgiveness is and what forgiveness is not.
