Father's Day at The Rocks | 1st September 2024

30
x 30

We're not trying to build a bigger church.
We're trying to raise the people who'll build many.

30×30 is our crazy vision to raise 30 high capacity leaders by the end of 2030 so that we can plant 5 churches across Australia. The formal training aspect of this vision is a 12-month formation pathway for the future leaders of new and revitalised Rocks churches across WA.

Expressions of interest open on October 15th.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

You can view the full Vision Page for 30x30 HERE, but we thought it would be best to readdress a few key pieces.

Let's be honest for a second.
We could just keep making Cannington and Baldivis bigger. Bigger rooms, bigger car parks, more gatherings, more screens. And honestly? That would probably be easier than attempting what we’re attempting. Not even probably. Definitely.

But that's not what we believe we are called to do.

When some people hear "30×30," you might hear The Rocks wants to get bigger. We get it. But that's not the heart of it. The heart of it is this:
We want more communities to have a healthy, outward-facing local church where people can encounter Jesus.

That means churches embedded in their neighbourhoods. Buildings that are open all week, not just on Sundays. Different locations that carry the same DNA without being carbon copies of Cannington.

Why does this matter so much to us? Because every single one of us is here because someone pursued us. Someone invited us. Someone noticed when we went missing for five weeks and actually reached out. More than that, the God of the universe chased us down with goodness and mercy when we weren't even looking for Him.

30×30 is us saying: we want to pursue others the way we have been pursued.
And that doesn't start with buildings. It starts with people.

DON'T USE PEOPLE TO BUILD MINISTRY. USE MINISTRY TO BUILD PEOPLE.

This has been something core to our church for a long, long time. Before we plant anything, we need leaders. Not people chasing a title or a platform. People who've been formed, whose character can carry the weight of leading when things get hard, because they will.
So we've built a pathway to extend on the philosophy of ministry we’ve always had, and to make sure the leaders we’re raising are prepared for whats to come.

SO WHAT IS THE 30×30 PATHWAY?

12 months. One day a week. Real experience of vocational ministry.

You'll give one full weekday a week to the church, normally a Tuesday. You'll be part of a cohort walking the journey together, and you'll be supported, coached and paid for your ministry day. More detail on that is coming soon.

Why a weekday?

Because that's where church leadership actually happens. The department meetings. The hallway conversations. The decisions. The mess.

We don't want to run a night school where you learn about ministry. We want you in the room, experiencing how leadership actually works, rather than finding out what happened by text afterwards.

HEAD. HEART. HANDS.

Everything in the pathway is built around three things. If we only work on one or two, we don't get a healthy leader. We need all three.

HEAD:
What you need to know

You'll dig into theology, Scripture, and the why behind how we do ministry at The Rocks.

What we want is leaders who can say, "This is what Scripture says, and this is how we got here," not just "This is what The Rocks believes." That means being able to sit with someone in their hardest questions about suffering, sexuality, doubt or the problem of evil, and actually walk with them through it.

Formal theological study is part of this, and it runs alongside the pathway, not before it. You don't need a degree to apply. We'll share more about study expectations for each role soon.

HEART:
Who you're becoming

Here's the thing no one tells you about leadership: pressure doesn't create character. It reveals it.

Every leader carries stuff. Old wounds, hidden shame, patterns we picked up from our families that we swore we'd never repeat. Left alone, those things don't stay quiet. They show up at the worst possible moment, usually when a whole church is watching.

So we're going to take the heart seriously. You'll walk through spiritual formation together as a cohort, with some great content and practices to get into the grit of your inner life. We also want to support you with access to counselling, because it's far better to deal with your junk now than in the middle of leading a church.

You won't be doing this alone. Our existing staff team will be walking through parts of this journey too, that's how important we think this is.

HANDS:
What you can actually do

You'll start in the places nobody sees, just like Jesus - he spent the first 30 years of his life in total anonymity!

For your first couple of months, you'll serve with our facilities team. Painting. Carpets. Storage. Maybe toilets. We're not joking.
Why? Because underneath every leader is one question: how badly do you actually want to serve if nobody sees you doing it?

From there, you'll carry real ministry responsibility, not simulated responsibility. You'll get exposure across our departments and then go deeper in one or two ministry areas where your gifting, passion and experience line up. Along the way, you'll build the skills churches often leave unspoken: communication (not just from a platform), decision-making, problem-solving, situational awareness, teamwork and managing your workload.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

We'd love for every person in this cohort to go on to lead a church or be part of a church planting or revitalization team.

But here's what we genuinely mean: if you finish the year and realise planting isn't for you, yet you walk away a healthier, more whole, more mature follower of Jesus, we'll call that a win.

This pathway is about forming people, not filling positions. At the same time, don’t come into this without the intention of being planted out.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR: THE SEVEN Cs

We're not looking for perfect people. No perfect people allowed, remember? But we are looking for people who are growing in these seven areas. They'll shape how we select candidates, and we'll keep coming back to them throughout the year.

1. Character

Does your character fit the responsibility?

2. Competence

Can you actually do the work?

3. Commitment

Have you shown genuine dedication over time?

4. Composure

How do you handle pressure, conflict and disappointment?

5. Chemistry

Can you work well and healthily with others?

6. Culture

Do you carry and champion the culture of The Rocks?

7. Calling

Why do you really want to do this?

HOW TO APPLY

Step 1: Send us your expression of interest

Answer one question: Why do you want to be part of 30×30?

You can do this as a short written response (maximum 150 words) or a one-minute video. Don't overthink it and don't over-produce it. Your phone is perfect. We want to hear your heart, not see your editing skills.

Please also send in a copy of your most recent resume.

Step 2: Name your sponsor

Tell us who can vouch for you. This could be a director, a ministry leader or a mentor: someone who has actually seen you serve and lead up close.

During this phase you’ll also elect which two departments you want to spend your time with:
  • Ministry Services (Operations)
  • Next Gen Ministries (Kids and Youth)
  • People Development (Discipleship and Young Adults)
  • Service Programming Division (Sundays and Production)

Step 3: Shortlisting and interview

If you're shortlisted, we'll sit down with you, hear your story and talk through where you're at. This may be in person or it could be over Zoom, but the key here is having a conversation about the details.

Step 4: Decision

We'll let you know either way, and we'll tell you why.

IF IT'S "NOT YET'

We know putting your hand up takes courage. So hear us on this.

If we don't offer you a place this round, it isn't a verdict on your worth, and it isn't the end of the conversation. It might sound something like: "We love your heart. We don't think you're ready yet. We'd love to see another year of leading where you’re currently serving, and we'd love to help you get there."

No for now doesn't mean no forever. Wherever we can, we'll help you grow toward your next application.

We will be taking applications in October each year until we see 30x30 fulfilled.

FAQ'S

Who can apply?
Anyone. Seriously. Applications are open to everyone, although most people applying will already call The Rocks home. You may also get a tap on the shoulder from one of our leaders encouraging you to apply. If that happens, take it seriously.
Do I need a theology degree?
No. Theological study runs alongside the pathway rather than being a hurdle you have to clear first. Expectations will vary depending on the role you're heading toward, and we'll share more detail soon. You will not need a formal qualification of any sort to be a part.
Is it paid?
Our intention is to pay participants for their ministry day. We'll share the details as part of the application process.
I work full-time. Can I still do this?
The pathway is built around one weekday a week, because being in the room matters. That's the normal expectation. So that might mean asking your current employer if you can drop a day.  If your situation is genuinely complicated, come and talk to us before you rule yourself out.
What roles is this preparing people for?
Lead Pastors, and leaders across the ministries a local church needs: Next Gen, People Development, Service Programming and Ministry Services.
Will we be planted as one complete team?
Not necessarily. Some opportunities will be brand-new church plants. Others will be revitalising an existing church that already has some leadership in place. Deployment will depend on the opportunity, the team it needs, and who is ready. It is also important to note that participating in 30x30 does not necessarily mean you will get planted, and it also isn’t a guarantee of future employment at The Rocks.
Will I have to move?
Possibly, but probably not during your 30x30 formation pathway. New locations could be anywhere across WA or Australia. We'll talk openly with you about what's involved well before anything is decided when it comes to the planting or revitalisation phase.
What's a revitalisation?
Right now, churches across our state are declining or closing their doors. A revitalisation is when we step in to bring new life, leadership and culture to an existing church, so that community doesn't lose its local church. We think these may end up being just as common as brand-new plants.
How many people are you taking?
Our intention is to take a cohort of around 4 or 6, but there's no artificial cap. If more people genuinely meet the criteria than we expected, we won't tell them to wait just because a spreadsheet said six.
What if I start and realise it's not for me?
That's exactly why we have regular reviews. Discovering this isn't your calling is a valuable outcome in its own right. You'll still walk away more formed than when you started. You miss every shot you don’t take!
Where does the 30×30 giving go?
Mostly into people. Training, formation and paying emerging leaders are at the heart of what we're raising money for, alongside the costs of planting and preparing locations.
I've got more questions.
We'd love to hear them! Let us know by emailing us at info@therocks.church

In summary

You don't need to have it all figured out.

You don't need the qualification, the perfect track record or the five-year plan. You just need to be willing to be formed, and to go after people the way Jesus came after you.

If something in you is stirring as you read this, don't ignore it.
